A few weeks ago, Craig and I took a much needed getaway trip to the beautiful island of the Bahamas! This vacation was everything and more. We hadn’t taken a big trip together since our dream vacation to Disney World, so it was really exciting to go somewhere new (just us) for the first time in two years.
We stayed on Nassau at the Melia Beach All-Inclusive Resort (which I highly recommend), but visited both Exuma and Paradise island for day trips. All of the islands were gorgeous, but Exuma was particularly stunning to visit. It’s much more secluded than Nassau and Paradise Island which are traditionally touristy.
While on Exuma, we got to swim with the island pigs, meet friendly lizards, feed stingrays and greet some big lemon sharks. We used Powerboat Adventures for the tour and I would definitely recommend them! You take an hour and fifteen minute boat ride to Exuma from Paradise Island with your first stop being at a small island of lizards. They were so adorable and actually way more shy than I imagined. You then poceed on with the rest of your day on a separate private island where some of the island pigs live in addition to lots of ocean life. The pigs are high energy and super hungry. I loved petting all of the tiny ones – they were so sweet.
Feeding stingrays was unlike anything else I’ve ever done. We were instructed to get on our knees in the water while holding a small piece of fish between our fingers. The large stingrays would swim right up to you and suck it up (with what felt like an intense grip) really quickly before swimming away. Prior to this experience I had no idea that all stingrays were poisonous so it was a little intimidating, but they were very friendly creatures and (as we were instructed) as long as you don’t get nervous and start kicking, flailing or making them feel trapped, you should be fine.
Also, if you are looking to get close to sharks, Exuma is definitely the place! There were nurse sharks and lemon sharks roaming the shallow water constantly. It was really incredible to be eating lunch off the dock and look down below to see so many swimming below your feet.
I could honestly go on forever telling you all about the amazing things we did and saw on this trip! Craig and I can’t wait to go back someday.
